Rating 2.50 out of 5

FEB 23 (PRINTWORDS NEWS)- Acer‘s Aspire range of laptops has become synonymous with desktop replacement and light entertainment based notebooks at an affordable price. The Aspire 5742G is a mainstream laptop that offers decent performance and good value for money. It will cater to the needs of both students and business users alike. At 2.4 kg it is not very light but not much bulky either.

The laptop is powered by a decent 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-460M CPU and also comes with 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM. The graphics is taken care of by the NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M graphics adapter. For storage Acer has thrown in a 500GB hard drive. The Aspire 5742G boasts of Optimus graphics technology which means you can switch between onboard and discrete graphics depending on the work you do and save battery life. Actually, the notebook detects the work and switches graphics mode accordingly. So when you browse the web or open MS office the Intel HD graphics will be used but when you launch a game the discrete GPU will get fired up. Its six cell battery will run for more than three hours after a charge which is decent.

The screen is 15.6 inch and sports a 1366×768 resolution. Acer has ensured that the laptop’s build quality does not suffer and the result is impressive. All the standard connectivity options are there including HDMI and WiFi. The screen has a glossy coating and hence it is reflective in nature. It stacks up well in features and performance front against rivals from HP and Dell.
