Dell Inspiron M501R-1748MRB: Lacks Raw Power

Rating 3.00 out of 5

APR 22 (PRINTWORDS NEWS)- Not all laptop buyers look for a pricey device that can act as desktop replacement PC. On the contrary, there are a number of users who give priority to the budget and are willing to live with moderate level performance. The Dell Inspiron M501R-1748MRB is meant for this type of users. It is not without its plus points though. You get a Blu Ray drive, something that is not normally found in a budget category laptop.

It looks similar to the Intel CPU powered Inspiron laptops in appearance. This is a 15.6 inch laptop and the build quality is quite nice. The model’s keyboard deck has a brushed metal finish that gels well with black keyboard. It follows the traditional layout rather than the latest chiclet style. It also packs in a spacious Touchpad. The screen of the laptop has a resolution of 1,366-by-768. It can display 720p HD content for sure. The glossy screen generates nice color and the viewing angles are good as well. The audio quality of the laptop is acceptable but not great. The nice thing is that speakers do not get distorted at top volume.

The laptop also offers a combo eSATA/USB port, which is ideal for heavy data transfers. The HDMI port is ideal if you want to watch Blu Ray films on a larger screen HDTV. The 802.11b/g/n wireless and a webcam complete the feature list. Dell offers Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) edition with this laptop. The storage is handled by a 640GB HDD.

The Dell M501R-1748MRB sports AMD’s VISION Premium platform which means an AMD CPU and GPU combo. The 2.3GHz AMD Phenom II N870 CPU is powerful but it cannot match the latest Intel Core CPUs in sheer performance. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 GPU is okay for HD content but it lacks the horsepower for gaming.
