New Orleans, Feb 23, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) Veteran tight end of New Orleans Saints, Jeremy Shockey’s stint with the club is over. According to reports, on Tuesday Shockey was released by the Saints who seems quite content with the promising Jimmy Graham. Jimmy Graham was drafted in the team in the third round in 2009.
The Saints acquired Jeremy Shockey three years back in a trade with the New York Giants, and since then the player has played a pivotal role in the club’s success. In this three year span , Shockey caught 139 passes for 1,460 yards with six touchdowns in 38 regular season games. Shockey’s crucial touchdown earned Saints their first Super Bowl victory with a margin of 31-17 against the Indianapolis a little over a year ago. But with a base salary of $4.2 million still left in his contract the club decided to release the nine year old veteran and move ahead with a much younger brigade.
After the move from the club, the veteran tight-end took to his Twitter account to express his gratitude on the club. Always will remember my time in New Orleans. What a city, you all welcomed me like one of your own, and we had a great run. Onto the next chapter, the Deep Unknown,” tweeted Jeremy Shockey. Shockey’s agent Drew Rosenhaus was unavailable to comment over the player’s release.
“Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans,” said coach Sean Payton. “He contributed to the success of our offense, both as a pass-catcher and run blocker, and we’re appreciative of his efforts,” he wound up. Jeremy Shockey’s future now hangs in balance, as his fans and well wishers are standing by his side in his time of distress.
