Tablet Buying Guide For Beginners

Rating 3.00 out of 5

APR 1 (PRINTWORDS NEWS)- Until a few years back tablets were not in vogue and tablets PCs were not considered a viable option by the majority of users. All that has changed after the advent of Apple iPad. It was released last year and made people understand for the first time that there could be other things than a laptop and smart phone for browsing the web on the move. The unexpected success of the iPad prompted other companies to join the tablet bandwagon and the result is clear. A few tablets are already available in the market. The iPad 2 has also been getting rave reviews since its launch. If you decide to buy a tablet there are certain things you will have to take into account.

First you need to consider if you need a tablet at all. The second generation tablets are coming out and the OS and technology used in them still need some amount of ironing. The tablets are marginally bigger than smart phones. You can pocket a smart phone easily but the same cannot be said of a tablet mo matter how light it is.

You will also need to consider the OS of the tablet. A lot of tablets come with Android OS. It is prudent to buy a tablet that ships with Honeycomb as that OS is built specially for tablets. The Android OS also enables you to access lots of apps from Android marketplace. If you buy iPad you will have to do with iOS. Most tablet manufacturers also add their own overlay atop Android.

The size is another consideration. Currently the tablets come in two sizes- 7 inches and 10 inches. However, 5 and 8.9 inches tablets are also going to be launched soon. A bigger screen means some benefits but it compromises portability. You also need to see the storage capacity and connectivity options offered by the tablet. Some tablets offer WiFi for web surfing and some offer both 3G and WiFi. You also need to see how costly the data plan offered by a carrier is and if it fits your bill or not.
