New York, June 24, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) On Thursday, U. S. President Barack Obama held a fundraiser with the gay community in New York. More than 600 lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual people attended the fundraiser and make the fundraiser a successful one by donating money. Though the President boosted the steps taken in favor of gay rights but he fell short when declaring his support for same sex marriage came in to picture. The event was named as “Gala with the Gay Community” and it hosted by eminent actor Neil Patrick Harris.

U. S. President welcomed the crowd and said that he believes, “gay couples deserve the same legal rights as any other couple in this country”. In his speech, the President wanted to encourage his support to the lesbian and gay votes but it seemed that he tried to sound politically safe, as far as issues of same sex marriage was concerned. President Barack Obama said that his view about gay marriage is evolving but right at this point of time he will support civil unions and not same sex marriage. However, the President assured that someday, “every single American, gay or straight or lesbian or bisexual or transgender” will be free to choose their own loved ones and live with them.

Regarding the gay marriage bill in New York, the President said that the law makers are doing exactly what they should do and hence he will not question their authority. Throughout his speech, the U. S. President avoided discussion about gay marriage. On the other hand, he also mentioned about the success of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” ban. About the same sex marriage movement Carroll Doherty, associate director of the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said that there has “noticeable shift” in last couple of years and with time things are going to change for better.
