Moscow, July 11, (PRINTWORDS NEWS) It came as a shock to the world when Russian Emergency Situations Ministry reported that at least 59 people are known to have died after a ship sank on Volga River, Russia on Sunday. The safety officials of Russia said that the ship was carrying around 200 people. Moreover, the shocking fact is that the ship “Bulgaria” was carrying 79 more people it was designed for. Dmitry Medvedev, the President of the country has declared Tuesday to be a national mourning day for the victims.

On the other hand, a reputed media outlet reported that the emergency officials have still not been able to find about sixty-seven people. However, the law enforcement officials were able to rescue 79 people and they were taken to hospital for treatment. On Monday, Russian Prosecutor’s Office stated that the ship was not licensed to take so many passengers and hence it was overloaded. Moreover, this ship’s left engine was damaged. Sergei Shoigu, the Emergency Situations Minister of Russia said that 25 passengers of the ship were not even officially registered and they had no tickets. President Dmitry Medvedev has appointed Igor Levitin, the Transport Minister to take necessary steps to investigate this case.

The President, in his interview, said that it is somewhat evident that such an unfortunate incident would not have happened if the “safety rules were followed, even despite the difficult weather situation”. President Dmitry Medvedev also added that the law enforcement officials are presently investigating why the ship’s owner “operated a ship that was in such a poor technical condition”. He also asked Prosecutor General’s Office to take information about everyone involved in the “Bulgaria” cruise which includes the people who issued navigation permit, ship owner and “those who were involved in organizing that boat tour, especially given the large number of children aboard”. Whereas, Svetlana Imyakina, the director of the company, which charters the board, has refused all the allegations and said that the ship was in good condition.
